Essential Beach Tips for your Dog

Before You Go

  • Check tide times – many of our beaches are best at low tide when the full expanse is revealed. We keep tide tables at the cottages for your convenience
  • Bring fresh water and a collapsible bowl – sea water isn’t suitable for drinking and can upset dogs’ stomachs
  • Pack waste bags and use them – keep Cornwall beautiful for everyone. Most car parks have disposal bins but do be prepared the National Trust expects you to bring waste home.
  • Consider a long lead for beaches with cliffs or rocky areas where you might need extra control
  • Sun protection – sun cream for you, shade breaks for your dog on hot days. Light-colored dogs may need pet safe sun cream on ears and noses
  • Check the weather forecast – coastal weather can change quickly

Beach Etiquette

  • Keep your dog under control, especially around other people and dogs. Not everyone is comfortable around dogs
  • Respect other dogs’ space – not every dog enjoys playing with others, even if yours does
  • Clean up after your dog, even on quiet beaches. Carry waste bags until you find a bin
  • Be mindful of nesting birds in spring and summer, particularly in dune areas like Holywell Bay
  • Give space to wildlife, if you spot seals at Hannafore, enjoy from a distance
  • If your dog is nervous, early mornings or late afternoons tend to be quieter

Safety Considerations

  • Rip currents can be dangerous if your dog loves swimming, choose calmer days and sheltered bays like Plaidy or Talland Bay
  • Be Tide Aware – Perranporth and Whitsands’ large expanses of sand can mean the water comes in very quickly, plan your visit around a dropping tide to avoid this.
  • Rinse your dog’s paws and coat after beach visits – salt water can irritate skin. We provide an outdoor tap at our cottages
  • Check for ticks after walks through dunes or grassland, particularly at Holywell Bay
  • Hot sand can burn paws in summer – test it with your hand first. Walk on damp sand or early/late in the day
  • Watch for jellyfish washed up on the beach, curious dogs may investigate
  • Cliff edges – keep dogs on leads near cliff paths, especially in windy conditions
  • Know your dog’s limits – not all dogs are strong swimmers. Some breeds struggle more than others

📍 Local Tip: Making the Most of Your Visit

We’ve been welcoming guests and their dogs to Trenant Cottages for many years, and we’ve learned what makes the difference between a good beach day and a great one:

  • Time your visits: Visit popular beaches like Talland Bay early morning (before 9am) or late afternoon (after 4pm) for the best experience, especially in summer
  • Follow the locals: If car parks are full, it’s worth trying the next beach on your list rather than waiting, you might discover an even better spot
  • Plan around tides: We keep tide tables at the cottages. Low tide typically offers the best beach experience with more space and rock pools to explore
  • Weather flexibility: Cornwall’s weather can change quickly. Having 2 or 3 beach options planned gives you flexibility if conditions aren’t ideal at your first choice
